7 Work-Life Attitudes

When it comes to careers, attitude can be just as important as ability. You carry your attitude throughout the workday and parade it before others. Your attitude is always on–it’s upfront, seen, and remembered. Philippians 2:5 tells the Christian, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”  

Incorporate the following seven attitudes into your work-life and avoid their opposites. Demonstrate a Christ-like attitude to your co-workers as a part of your witness in the workplace: 

Be composed not agitated. Jesus says in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus can help you with all of your career challenges. He has already overcome all of the troubles of the world. Jesus can prevent trouble, resolve trouble, and sustain you through any and all trouble. 

Be contented not greedy. Hebrews 13:5: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Earning money and planning for your future are both good things. Money is spiritually neutral, but the “love of money” is not—it’s a deceitful master who is never satisfied. 

Be diligent not careless. Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” Do your job with all your heart. Deliver quality results even if your boss or co-workers do not. Be active and industrious when others are lazy. Your exemplary job performance is a witness to others. Christians should be the best workers in every organization.

Be generous not stingy. 1 Timothy 6:18: “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” Share your time, knowledge, and resources with others in the workplace. Build people up rather than tear them down. God promises if you give you will receive. 

Be grateful not critical. Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” All honorable work is pleasing to God. Whether you are an executive, a business owner, or a laborer – it is all the same to God. He is more interested in your heart than your resume. 

Be humble not arrogant. Proverbs 22:4 “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life.” Humility is recognizing your dependence on God, and it has nothing to do with weakness or denying your God-given talents. Your humility exalts God and invites Him to intervene in your life in positive ways. 

Be upright not sneaky. Proverbs 11:23 “The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.” Do the right things for the right reasons and in the right ways. There will be no looking over your shoulder and nothing to hide. Enjoy the freedom of transparency in your dealings with others. 

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

Work Attitude Values Enhancement : Your Personal Principles

I say ‘personal’ work attitude values enhancement principles for a reason. These principles were some of those that I felt worked well for me. And I did a little scribble on them a long time ago.

Pride, passion and belief are important as elements within my personal work attitude values enhancement principles.

However, there is another side to these:


1. Skills
Skills and knowledge are important to complement pride when doing your work as a newbie seeking career success. You can have a lot of pride and take personal responsibility for your work. But if you lacked the skills and knowledge to do your work well, it will not be productive. You will still not be able to achieve the desired results.

Be aware of the skills and knowledge your work requires. Sharpen those skills. If you need to learn new ones, make plans to acquire them. You should discuss them with your immediate supervisor. Skills and knowledge must be the backbone of your pride at work in order for you to achieve the success you seek.


2. Direction
The second personal work attitude values enhancement principle you should learn is that passion must be led by direction.



You cannot have burning passion for your work but lack the direction your passion can be guided towards. Passion is what will pull you through the toughest times at work. It gives you the energy to burn the midnight oil. It pushes you to do that little extra.

However, this energy must have a direction. Without direction, your passion goes all over the place. Your efforts are not concentrated. It is not honed in on completing the priorities.


3. Action
Last on your personal work attitude values enhancement principle is action. Having a belief is important when seeking career success. As far as your career success is concerned, it is even more important if you could align your professional belief with that of the organization. And this belief must be backed by solid action.


When your beliefs are backed by action, career success is at your doorstep. Have a plan of action on how you can help your company achieve its goalsand at the same time achieve your career success.


4. Your Personal WAVE
If you can internalize these as your personal work attitude values enhancement (WAVE) principles, you will greatly increase the chance of career success. Think about these principles as a wave that pushes you to the shore of career success.
